A record showing of 27 Ultimate 20's converged on Lake Norman, North Carolina for the 2006 East Coast Championships.
Many showed up on Friday for practice racing where the winds were light. Several short practice races were run with about 17 boats participating. A great tailgate party followed with a huge crowd of U20 sailors gathering around for tips, stories, food and of course Goombay Smashes.
Saturday came with a beautiful 78 degree day with southwest winds from 7 to 12 knots . Each race had a little more wind. Don Corey, Eric Vigrass, and Brad Boston secured the top three spots after 3 races setting up for a showdown for Sunday. Saturday night was a great dinner hosted by Lake Norman Yacht Club and its members.
Sunday came with a change in conditions. The conditions were a sunny 55 degrees with the winds from the northwest at 18 with gusts to 30. Several boats decided to either stay in or came in early due to the conditions. Very puffy winds from different directions made the sailing very challenging. Several boats incurred damage from broken halyards, broken blocks, to broken spars. Due to the conditions, the final race was shortened at the windward mark and all came back in to access the damage, have lunch and receive awards. Results below. Click Here for Photos!
