U20s
are active across the US. Local fleets are gaining traction and
growing quickly.
Lake Norman Yacht Club boasts a fleet of thirteen U20s, hosting local, regional and national events. The 2004 National Championship drew twenty-four U20s from twelve states and Canada. Twenty-seven U20s sailed in 2006 and twenty-four sailed in 2008 for the East Coast Championship held at Lake Norman. The club hosts two well attended open keelboat one design regattas each year, the Midwinter Keelboat Regatta in March and the Carolina Keelboat One Design Regatta in November with the U20s being the largest fleet in attendance.
BayView
Yacht Club in Detroit owns 6 U20s for member use, and
supports an extremely active schedule including weekly races,
Detroit NOODs, and the 2002 U20 Nationals. Richard
Hunt is the fleet captian. Click Here to see Bayview's review of the 2005 U20 season.
California U20s gather regularly throughout the year for a wide range of regattas. A typical U20 racing season includes lake racing (Konocti Cup, Whiskeytown, Go For The Gold, High Sierra), SF Bay regattas like the Delta Ditch, Great Pumpkin, Berkeley Mids, Three Bridge Fiasco and travel regattas like Santa Cruz One Design Invitational, San Diego NOOD and Fern Ridge Reservoir OR. We typically get 8-17 boats on the line and keep the racing fun with U20 potlucks and parties after racing. The U20 fleet features a nice mix of competitive regattas and family friendly regattas with a number of husband/wife/kid teams. You might even see a dog onboard for some of our low key regattas. There are currently growing concentrations of U20s at Richmond YC and Santa Cruz YC as well as several scattered about the Sacramento, Lake Tahoe, LA and San Diego areas.
