Title: 2010 NA's Dillon Colorado
Post by: Jim Ulatowski on December 10, 2009, 01:34:18 AM
Hi Everyone

On behalf of Colorado Fleet 4 I would like to invite you all to the 2010 Ultimate 20 North American Championships.

Location: Lake Dillon Colorado
Date: August 2, 3, 4 2010

The Colorado U20 fleet consists of 10 active boats and we have a very active fleet with 7-9 boats showing up at all the local regattas. A great group of guys and family that help out at all times and make things happen. We are honored to hold the NAs here and present the class with a memorable experience for 2010.

Being centrally located in the middle of the country we feel that this will be an excellent location to hold the N/As. Drawing U20s from both Coasts and the Midwest there is the potential of upwards of 25 to 30 boats and maybe more attending. Currently we have 15 boats committed to coming on the Class website and look forward to seeing that number continue to rise.

The Dillon open is scheduled for July 31st & August 1st and is one of our premier Regattas. We see boats numbering 100 plus form U20s, J80s, J24s, J22s, Stars, Etchells and more. http://www.dillonyachtclub.com/

This will give everyone a great opportunity to get some tune up time on the lake prior to the NAs
The Dillon Yacht Club is located at the Dillon Marina on the East shore of Lake Dillon. Established in 1968, the club has approximately 200 members. DYC has an active history of competitive sailing and has produced a number of world-class sailors. The club has an excellent reputation for managing the largest sailing regatta in the Rocky Mountain West in often varying conditions. The club is also known for its on-shore activities.
The Dillon Yacht Club is situated within the Town of Dillon Colorado and is adjacent to many other family activities including a beautiful park, outdoor amphitheater, bike trails, dining, hotels, and shopping. The Club is just a short drive from other Summit County Colorado attractions and destinations like Breckenridge, Frisco, Keystone, Silverthorne and a quick 70 mile drive from downtown Denver and its many attractions.
The area has something for everyone in the family and is a major destination here in the west. The area offers fishing, camping, biking, Hiking, Kayaking, Sailing, power boating,.
So mark your calendars pack up the family and crew and join us for an awesome time.
Keep your eyes on the class website for updated information coming soon.

Any recommendations on accomodations?  Love that walking (stumbling) distance to the docks or back..... Goombay's tend to do that.   ;D

Sounds like a great venue, and within striking distance of the Northern Tier.  We are changing the dates on the U20 Lake Superior regatta to ensure that the 5-7 U20's that do the N. Tier can make Lake Dillion.

Just an FYI.  The most ever at a U20 NAC was at Lake Norman in 2004 with 24 in attendance and the most ever U20s at a single event (in the world) was the East Coast Championship at Lake Norman in 2006 with 27 on the line.  You guys just may have the venue to bring enough of these great boats together for a U20 record setting event!
Lookin' real good this early.
To everyone in U20 land, don't miss this one, check it out, plan now.

Steve, I have a few things up in the air for that time frame but if I am not there I'm sure Lehman would bring Scissors out with my truck.  If I am there, the Minnesota/Wisconsin contingent won't fit in our tow vehicles (by number not size!) so we will get Scissors out there.  Just book a flight.

Its the vacation time for the round trip drive that hurts. Change one of the delivery legs to a airline flight and life is better...

And the blender could tag along with Sassy spreading its Goombay cheer through the Northern Tier and the NA's.

Maybe we could fly my padawan apprentice to Lake Norman in March to tow the boat and blender back for the Northern Tier and NA's.  He would need a vehicle but could convoy withDobie for lodging and to tell him if his rig was ON FIRE!!! :o

To Jim and the rest organizing NA's,

I have a request that I would like to float...

The original proposal, as I understood it, was for NA's to precede the Dillon Open.  This has been moved so that NA's will follow the Dillon Open.  This creates an issue for those of us with a 2-day or more drive.  For some of us, it may not be practical to race the full five days.  The issue is that when we arrive, it will be in the middle of a pretty large regatta on a relatively small lake.  This will make tune-up challenging for those boats that are not also racing the Dillon Open.  I would think the goal would be to encourage boats that are even far away to race NA's and that they would not be heavily penalized because they cannot race the DO.

If it is feasible and depending on the number of boats in this situation, (I suspect it will be about 4-8), it would be nice to have the Dillon Open race committee give those boats a practice start and race following the last regatta start on Sunday afternoon.  I for one would be willing to pay some small start fee for that privilege and I think it would go a long way toward a level playing field against those boats who have been racing for two straight days at the venue.

Please think about this and perhaps anyone else who has this issue and/or alternatives to this issue can chime in with their thoughts.

Lets keep them coming in and set a new record for the most competitors at a U20 regatta and the North American Championships.

I am considering this regatta, but would like to know what we are going to do with boats with new carbon spars. I really do not want to stir the pot, so to speak on this issue. I am fine with whatever the class decides, and I understand the carbon spar is currently not class legal. I just need to know when we are likely to have a decision one way or another for this specific regatta. I have to schedule time off months in advance.

I do have a new carbon spar on the way, and I once I move the fittings over to the new mast I plan on permanently retiring the old half twisted spar.

Dave
The Carbon spar is currently not class legal and will not be permitted to sail in the NAs. I am certainly hopeful that we can come to some kind of an agreement before the NAs on allowing the carbon spar in.
Im encouraging the board to take swift action on this matter and try to get it resolved as soon as possible and I feel that that needs to be done ASAP in the next couple months so people like you can make plans for NAs
We have the opportunity to have one of the best turnouts for a NAs this year and we want to see as many as possible to compete and this spar issue is going to either have a negative or positive influence on the participation.
The solution will not be perfect and we will not please everyone but we must get started with something and start to see what performance differences start to show up.

Lets look for a speedy solution soon.

As previously mentioned, the anticipated vote on the Carbon Spar would be near the end of March 2010 pending additional testing results.  This should be in plenty of time for the NA's to have a decision.

Cheers,

Is anyone interested in sharing a larger Condo big enough for two teams.  There are some 3 bedroom condos (plus living room fold outs) close to the Marina in the $150 range. Approx $75 / night for 3 people with full amenities is a pretty inexpensive way to go.  I plan on being there for the Dillon Open as well as the NAs

To all NA participants:
Time is closing in on us with just 5 weeks to go for what is shaping up to be one awesome NAs here in Colorado.

I would like to encourage everyone to down load the sail measurement form. Get with another U20 owner to measure your sails and sign off on them. This will save us all a tremendous amount of time and speed up the check in and registration process greatly.

If you have not already done so you will want to get your registrations in for both the NAs and the Dillon open and avoid any late fees.

We currently have 20 boats pre registered for the NAs so if you have not yet done so please get on that ASAP. At the very least please give us a heads up that you are planning to attend so we can better plan for the event. It is critical at this point to have a good idea of the number of people attending so we can plan for the banquet and other aspects of the event.
This will help us tremendously.

Also, Coral Reef Sailing Apparel is one of our sponsors and is doing the sirts and other items for the regatta. If you would like to order anything else with the regatta logo on it, please go the U20 NA section fo their site. Here is the link.

What a great event!!!!!  I really enjoyed meeting so many great sailors and new friends.  The drive to L.A. went well, and I made it back to work by 8:00 AM.  Now on to the regular grind.............

I have posted some pictures both on the doyleboston FB page and also on http://www.doyleboston.phanfare.com/4777667

These shots were taken by April Abbott and Brandi Pilling, thanks to both for letting us them. Sorry they kind of revolve around Pearon, Honour and our customers but at least there are some pics :)

I know that this is a little late but I would like to thank everyone for such a great regatta.  I am sorry that we had to run out before the awards presentation but I had a scheduling conflict that worked out in the end.

The U 20 is always my favorite boat and Dillon made the regatta that much more fun. Between the circling clouds to the cold rain (and the sun)  the conditions were always changing making us think hard about our next move.

It was a little different crewing this year but it gave me a chance to see the lake and the surrounding a lot more. Thanks again for the great time and I will see you soon.

Hi Everyone
Here is an update from Randy Shelton from Colorado Coconuts and the video production of the 2010 NA's.

Hello U20 Fleet:

The U20 North Americans 2010 film is coming along great. We certainly are having no problems with people being camera shy or with shots of poor racing skills, as the fleet is obviously very skilled, but the main problem we are having is that the film is still just too dang long (over two hours still) and we have to cut a lot more footage to get it into a more viewable time frame. Unfortunately difficult choices are putting some good clips on the editing bay floor.  And in case your wondering, yes every participating boat is in the current version, and always looking good! well almost always. In addition to just a little bit of racing there are also shots of  boat measurements, registration, interviews, shore activities, debriefings,  of course a few embarrassing moments as well. I think its the best sailing movie ever made, because all of you participated in it.

In our effort to make this film as good as we can for the U20 Fleet,  We hope  to have a "rough draft preview" sometime in October, then make some final revisions based on the feedback we receive. Then hopefully we will be looking at late October for a release date. We will keep you posted on the progress.

Thanks
Randy Shelton

Some time ago I indicated a desire to acquire the video. How do I do that?
