[Update] The NOR update, inviting the U20's, and the U20 Registration Form are now attached.
When I get back to the after racing at Lake Norman CKOD, I t stopped by the club and dropped of the boat and ended having a beer (or two) with one of our senior members who is a diehard J/24 sailor. The conversation turned to Easter Regatta which our club has put on for 40+ years. The first 20 years or s0 were on E-scows, and the rest have been J/24s. The regatta has gone from 50 boats in its heyday to mid to high 20s now more recently. The regatta need to grow to stay profitable but growth probably isn't going to come from J/24's. He had an interesting suggestion: Add an Ultimate 20 fleet to Easter Regatta.
Easter is the big regatta in Columbia. We take care of the sailors, the race committees are consistently good and it a well run regatta. There are boat from all over the East Coast.
It's a 3 day regatta (Friday - Sunday) always on Easter weekend. (duh.) For the last five or six years the liquor has been supplied by the local U20 fleet from a blender with a huge U20 sticker on it. The J's like us. Easter Regatta is April 17-20 next year. We can arrange for boat storage at the club, places for people to stay for the regatta and boat transportation to Charleston Race.

So... What I am asking for is a list of U20's that are interested in attending the next Easter Regatta.
I like to bring this up to our board but I need to have a idea of how many boats would show up if this would happen. I'm not asking for any commitments. I just want to get an idea of the interest in trying this.
-
Thanks Steve. BJ and i would be interested, but i think we need to promote either the Easter REgatta or Charleston as i don't think many people from out of the SE will be able to commit to both. The Easter Regatta would provide a great event for the U20's to race in, far less costly than CRW and with less hassle to launch and dock. CRW is a lot of fun, good to connect with sailors from across the US and to enjoy Charelston if folks are looking for a winter escape. It has become a regatta for those with really deep pockets - witness all the pros. Discussion?
-
I believe we would be able to participate that week. It would be fun to see a big turn out in Columbia. It's a really nice club with good parking, launch ramps and great facilities.
-
I did not do a traveling regatta last year and was planning to go north this spring for Charleston. I would much prefer going to Easter in Columbia if the class decides to do it as opposed to Charleston. I sailed at Lake Murray a few years ago and it is a first rate club. My work and kids schedule is really tight so I like the idea easier logistics.
-
Easter Regatta For U20's is not a done deal. We'll have to get enough boats to commit ahead soon, like December, to show that we can actually bring the boats to the regatta. 7 or 8 won't do it. We'll probably need to 10+ commits.
Billy, see the Pensacola thread I just started.
-
The Outrigger Yacht Club contingent of the Lake Norman U20 fleet have committed to the CSC Easter Regatta should this happen. This includes Juhl/Hartwell #75, Richard Mayberry #21 and Don Corey #25. So now it appears as though we have 9 or 10 committed for the event with only one LNYC U20 responding.
Frankly I feel this could be the U20 alternative to Charleston Race Week, maybe a good thing. Less expensive entry fee, no tides, friendly club, no current, free dockage, fresh water, less expensive accommodations, more I'm sure. Downside, it just ain't Charleston.
The three of us will probably not be attending CRW regardless.
The opinions expressed above are solely those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the views held by any other members of the U20 Class Association.
-
Upside, it just ain't Charleston. At least during CRW.
-
I'm going to close out this thread since there won't be quite enough participation to justify this.
-
Steve, how many boats do we need for a U20 one design start??
-
I am or was planning on this regatta. Anyone else? I can't do Charleston so what else is on the table?

OK, there seems to be some more interest in Easter Regatta since the New Year.
I'm in contact with the Regatta Chairman about getting an official invitation for the U20 class. (By the way, the regatta chairman is Alex Bolan who a lot of you have met before racing on my boats.)
-
Where can we sign up Steve
-
They're working on the NOR now.
-
The NOR update (inviting the U20's) and registration should be going on the website today or tomorrow.
The registration fee is more than I hoped, around $200. This is to keep it in line with the J/24's registration fee of $300. Each registrations includes arrival refreshments (Dark & Stormys or Mt. Gay) & weekend beer bracelets & dinner Friday and Saturday for skipper and crew and racing. And Goombays.
We've arranged for the U20's to get discounts off the published cost as needed. We're thinking a $50-$75 discount per boat to help build attendance this year.
cheers!

Early Rego discount of $75 before the end of this week and $50 there after would work for us. ;-)

The NOR update and registration form attached.

OK, checks in the mail Steve. Looking forward to seeing 15 boats on the line. Beautiful weather is forecast.

Looking for a hotel. Where is something close to the venue??
-
Look for Irmo, SC. There a bunch of hotels near Columbiana Mall and more at the Irmo exit on the interstate. There's all the usual brands. The Residence Inn in Irmo is brand new. All are with 10-15 minutes of the club.
Try to avoid staying in south of the Lake in Lexington. The cops sit on the dam and pull speeders/DUIs all night long. It amusing to watch across the lake from the sail club patio, but not from your car.
-
The HI Express in Irmo (considered Columbia) on Harbison Blvd across from Columbiana Mall is where we have stayed for many events at Columbia Sailing Club for the past few years. Nice quick trip to the club with a Kroger store in route for food, beer, ice and gas.
Looking forward to this one!!!!!!!!!!!!

Wow, this place is awesome. I'm thinking this has got to be a annual venue. Great sailing, great club and great people. A super well organized event. Thanks Steve Rose!
-
A huge thanks to all the U20's that make the trek to Columbia. Cold, rainy and blowing like stink. Yep, I can deal with that. As Mark Dobie would say: Epic.
Sassy blew out a gudgeon so we had to pull out early.
I am working on getting the official results to post.

Results are now listed the first post.
Thanks to everyone that made the trip!
